A Federal Solar Battery Rebate — Here’s What You Need to Know

In 2025, the Australian Government introduced a solar battery rebate. It’s part of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, designed to help more Aussies access reliable, renewable energy and future-proof their homes.

Eligibility depends on your property type, including off-grid status and high grid connection costs, and the rebate is calculated based on battery size and when your batteries are installed.

Save on Battery Storage

Eligible homes could receive thousands in rebates depending on battery size - from 5kWh to 50kWh.

Built for Remote Homes

Off-grid systems are expected to qualify if you're 1km+ from the grid or face $30,000+ grid connection costs.

No More Blackouts

Solar + battery = power stored to use it when you most need it - total protection from power outages.

Stack Rebate Savings

Maximise value by stacking incentives - for even bigger savings on your off-grid system.

“We always wanted to be off-grid and independent, but also maintain the normal suburban standard of life. We expected a lot out of the system - like to charge our electric vehicle. Our first cabinet had the whole setup - the solar panels and 40 kWh of batteries. To be able to recharge the car fully in winter, we did a bit of an upgrade - adding another 20 kWh. It’s been great.”

How Do I Know If I Qualify for a Government Rebate?

To access the Australian Government’s battery rebate, your system and installation will need to meet specific eligibility criteria – this ensures the rebate is directed toward reliable, efficient, and safe energy storage solutions. Whether you’re upgrading an existing system or installing new batteries, it’s important to understand the key requirements, from battery size and approved brands to installation timing and accreditation.

Rooftop Solar Panels

A battery system installed with existing or new solar panels in order to capture and store renewable energy.

5kWh to 50kWh Storage

Properties installing or upgrading their solar battery storage - rebate qualified systems from 5kWh to 50kWh.

Residential or Commercial

Available to homeowners, small businesses, and community facilities that aimed to be energy independent.

The Federal Battery Rebate applies to eligible battery systems installed from 1 July 2025, subject to program rules.

The rebate value depends on battery size and installation date. It is delivered through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) as an upfront discount and reduces over time. We’ll quote the full rebate value according to your planned installation date.

The rebate applies to batteries with a usable capacity between 5kWh and 50kWh, for example: Pylontech US5000b batteries.

The rebate is designed to lower the upfront cost of installing a solar battery, making energy storage more accessible for households, small businesses, and off-grid users. The goal is to encourage renewable energy adoption and help reduce long-term energy costs.

Yes. Off-grid battery systems may be eligible where properties meet the program’s criteria, such as distance from the grid or high grid connection costs, subject to the rules in place at installation.

Rebate eligibility and value cannot be locked in ahead of installation. The rebate value is determined by the installation date, not the quote date. If installation occurs after a rebate change date, the applicable rebate may be lower.

Yes! Pylontech US5000B batteries are eligible – when installed as part of a compliant system and sized within the program requirements at the time of installation.

The program is administered under Federal Government frameworks, with the Clean Energy Regulator (CER) overseeing eligibility and compliance. The rebate is typically applied by accredited retailers and installers as an upfront discount.

No. Rebate values reduce over time with rates decreasing approximately 10% every 6 months. The rebate value applied is determined by the installation date.

The rebate is applied upfront, reducing the total cost on your invoice – you won’t need to claim it separately.

The rebate is calculated using a tiered structure. The first portion of battery capacity receives a higher rebate rate, while additional capacity above certain thresholds receives a lower rate.

The Federal Government has adjusted the program to manage demand, align incentives with declining battery costs, and ensure the scheme remains viable through to 2030. Changes also aim to discourage oversized battery installations that exceed typical household needs.

Here’s How Much You Could Save and Why Acting Now Matters

The Bigger the Battery, The Bigger the Rebate

The more usable kWh you install, the more you can save* with the government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

Battery Size Install Before May 2026* Install From May 2026* Difference
10 kWh ~$3,300 ~$2,450 ~$850 less
20 kWh ~$6,700 ~$4,900 ~$1,800 less
30 kWh ~$10,000 ~$5,600 ~$4,400 less
40 kWh ~$13,400 ~$6,000 ~$7,400 less
50 kWh ~$16,700 ~$6,300 $10,000+ less

Note: Larger off-grid battery systems are the most affected, with rebate reductions exceeding $10,000 for some installations from May 2026.

*Figures are indicative only and based on current STC values. Pre-May 2026 examples assume a linear rebate structure. Post-May 2026 examples reflect the proposed tiered rebate structure and reduced STC rates. Final rebate value depends on installation date, battery size, processing fees, and government policy.

Year 5 kWh 10 kWh 15 kWh 20 kWh 25 kWh 30 kWh 40 kWh 50 kWh

*Savings are based on a government rebate of to $372* per usable kWh (*conditions apply). Rebate values, eligibility, and year-on-year reductions are indicative only and may be subject to change.

Why Waiting Could Cost You More Than You Think

Changes to government rebates may lead to increased demand, limited battery supply, long wait times for installers, and rising installation costs.
