Off-grid solar system on rural property in Glenaroua Victoria

Off-Grid Solar Case Study: Powering a 110-Acre Property in Glenaroua, Victoria

Connecting rural properties to the electricity grid is becoming harder and more expensive. For many landowners, off-grid solar power is now the most practical solution.

That was the case for Brett, who owns a 110-acre property in Glenaroua, regional Victoria. When Brett explored grid connection, the quotes quickly reached six figures. As a result, extending the grid was not a realistic option.

Instead, Brett chose an off-grid solar system designed and installed by Commodore Australia. After more than 12 months of operation, the results speak for themselves.

The Challenge: Powering a Rural Property Without Grid Access

When Brett purchased the property four years ago, it had no power, no sheds, and minimal infrastructure. Water came from tanks and a dam, and the nearest grid connection sat around two kilometres away in both directions.

After reviewing the cost of bringing power to the site, Brett ruled out grid connection entirely. At that point, off-grid solar became the only viable path forward.

The Solution: A Custom Off-Grid Solar Power System

Commodore Australia worked closely with Brett to understand how the property would be used, both now and into the future. Based on those needs, the team designed a complete off-grid system built around a PowerHub Commercial.

Rather than assembling components on site, the system arrived pre-wired, tested, and ready to install. This approach reduced installation time and ensured everything worked together from day one.

Key system features included:

  • A pre-wired, insulated, temperature-controlled Power Hub cabinet
  • Lithium battery storage using Pylontech US5000B batteries
  • Victron Energy Quattro inverters with full system monitoring
  • Fronius Primo inverter for AC-coupled solar
  • 52 x 440W solar panels across the machinery shed and garage
  • Integrated generator backup with automatic start and shutdown

Installation: Simple, Fast, and Well Organised

Installation took place over two days.

Because the Power Hub system arrived pre-built, on-site work stayed efficient and tidy. The installers used a forklift to position equipment, while solar panels were mounted across the shed and garage roofs.

As a result, the system came online quickly with minimal disruption to the property.

Real-World Results: Minimal Generator Use

After more than a year of operation, the system performance has exceeded expectations.

In total, the backup generator has run for just 17 hours over 12 months.

Under normal conditions, the system runs entirely on solar and batteries. However, if battery levels fall to 20 percent, the generator starts automatically. It then charges the batteries to around 45 percent before shutting down, allowing solar generation to take over again.

Because of this smart control, fuel use, noise, and maintenance remain extremely low.

Everyday Benefits of Off-Grid Power

Since installing the system, daily life on the property has changed significantly.

Brett now enjoys:

  • Reliable power for water pumps
  • Air conditioning during summer
  • Stable electricity for household and farm use

Most importantly, the system delivers confidence. Even during poor weather, power remains available without constant generator use.

Designed for Long-Term Reliability

The system was not oversized or underbuilt. Instead, it was carefully matched to actual energy needs and seasonal solar conditions.

This design approach delivers:

  • High solar usage
  • Longer battery life
  • Reduced generator reliance
  • Flexibility for future expansion

As a result, the system continues to perform efficiently year-round.

A True Turnkey Off-Grid Solution

From initial design through to installation and commissioning, Commodore Australia managed the entire project.

This turnkey approach removed complexity and ensured every component worked seamlessly together. According to Brett, both the system design and customer support have been excellent.

For rural landowners facing high grid connection costs, this project shows what is possible with a properly engineered off-grid solar system.
