Expanding Off-Grid Solar

Case Study: Expanding Off-Grid Solar Capacity in Lancefield, Victoria

Introduction

In Lancefield, Victoria, a significant upgrade to an existing off-grid solar system was undertaken to meet the high energy demands of a newly constructed residence. Originally equipped with a 3 phase 30kVA Victron off-grid system for his shed. The homeowner sought to expand his off-grid solar capacity to ensure complete grid independence for his home, which includes substantial air conditioning loads and the charging of an Electric Vehicle (EV).

Background

Initially, the setup, designed to power the shed during the house construction phase, laid a solid foundation for renewable energy use on the property. Now, with the house completed, the homeowner aimed to extend the solar system’s capabilities to effectively support the entire property’s energy needs.

The system expansion included the addition of:

  • 74 x 440W Canadian Solar Panels: We added a total of 32.56kW with these panels for their efficiency and durability. Boosting the system’s power generation capacity.
  • 2 x Fronius PV Inverters: We integrated a 15kW Fronius Symo and an 8.2kW Fronius Symo inverter to handle the increased solar output. Ensuring the reliable conversion of solar energy into usable electricity.

System Integration and Remote Monitoring

Crucially, the upgrade required seamless integration with the existing Victron system, thereby allowing for comprehensive communication between all system components. Consequently, this integration facilitates remote monitoring capabilities. Enabling the homeowner to track the performance of the new inverters and the overall system output in real-time.

This comprehensive upgrade to the solar system has successfully secured grid independence for the homeowner. Ensuring ample capacity to handle the property’s extensive energy requirements. This includes powering substantial air conditioning units and charging an Electric Vehicle (EV). The enhanced system size and efficiency guarantee that the homeowner can rely on a consistent and robust power supply. Effectively eliminating concerns over meeting the high energy demands of the residence.

Conclusion

Indeed, this Lancefield project serves as a testament to the effectiveness of solar energy in achieving grid independence for high-demand residential settings. Moreover, the strategic expansion of the off-grid solar system ensures that the homeowner can enjoy an uninterrupted power supply, regardless of the property’s energy consumption levels. Furthermore, this case study underscores the potential of solar technology to provide reliable, independent power solutions for homes with significant energy needs.
