Dual-Method Solar Charging System

Case Study: Tailoring a Dual-Method Solar Charging System for John’s Dream Home in Carwoola, NSW 2620

Introduction

Embarking on the journey to go off-grid is not a mere flick of a switch. And John’s venture in Carwoola stands as a testament to this. Collaborating closely with him, we meticulously analysed his anticipated power usage. Scrutinizing each appliance and their expected run time, especially since his dream home was under construction. Leaving us without previous electricity data to calculate an off-grid solar system. This case unfolds the intricate journey of implementing a Dual-Method Solar Charging System, ensuring John’s dream home is not only powered but thrives amidst the lush, forested surroundings.

Challenge

Nestled in a heavily forested area, John’s new home presented unique challenges for solar design. A challenge which we navigated through shadow forecasting for all weeks of the year. Instead of opting for roof-mounted solar panels, we installed a ground-mount solar array, trenched over 50m away, to maximize solar production, ensuring optimal energy generation despite the location’s challenges.

Solution

At the residence, we installed a customized Power Hub Commercial 20, which includes:

This setup enables John to live off-grid as seamlessly as he would on-grid.

Dual Solar Charging Methods

John’s system employs two methods of solar charging, each with its unique advantages and challenges:

  1. AC Coupled Solar: 32 of the 48 panels connect to 2 x 5kW Fronius inverters. Power flows from the panels, through the Fronius (240V), through the AC sub-board on the Commodore Power Hub, through the Victron Quattro Inverter Charger, and into the batteries (48V). This method is highly efficient for loads, particularly for the workshop, cooling/aircon, and daytime appliances, providing an additional 10kW of inverter power during peak sun, totaling 26kW of inverter power.
    • Pros: Increased inverter power; 5% more efficient direct to loads.
    • Cons: 5% less efficient when charging batteries; no blackstart prevention.
  2. DC Coupled Solar: 16 of the 48 panels connect to the 450V/100A SmartSolar charge controller. Power moves directly from the solar panels to the batteries, charging them, and then transforms into usable power (240V) through the inverter.
    • Pros: Highly efficient battery charging; blackstart prevention.
    • Cons: No additional inverter power; loses efficiency when running through the Quattro to the loads.

Results

With the installation completed by Joel and the team at Ampforce Solar & Electrical, John now enjoys a robust, efficient power system that caters to his specific needs and environmental challenges.

Conclusion

In conclusion, John’s case underscores the importance of meticulous planning, innovative solutions, and strategic partnerships in successfully implementing an off-grid solar power system. The dual-method off-grid solar charging system not only ensures optimal power generation and usage but also provides a reliable, efficient power source for John’s dream home amidst the forested landscape of Carwoola.
