21.12kW ground-mounted solar array for 30kVA three-phase off-grid solar system in Derrinal Victoria

30kVA Three-Phase Off-Grid Solar System in Derrinal, VIC

Powering a Fully Electric Rural Home with Pool Heating and Air Conditioning

Building an off-grid system for a small shed is one thing. However, powering a fully electric rural home with ducted air conditioning and a heated swimming pool is very different.

In this case study, we explore a 30kVA three-phase off-grid solar system installed in Derrinal, Victoria. The project was delivered in partnership with Luke from LAD Electrical. Together, we designed a system that supports high daily energy use while still delivering long-term reliability.

Project Overview

Location: Derrinal, Victoria
Property Type: Fully electric rural residence

Main Loads:

  • Ducted reverse cycle air conditioning
  • All-electric kitchen
  • Heated swimming pool
  • General household three-phase loads

Because these loads often run at the same time, the system needed to provide strong and steady power. In addition, it had to handle surge loads from motors and compressors. At the same time, battery storage needed to support heavy evening use.

Therefore, we supplied a Commodore Power Hub 30 Commercial system matched to the property’s real-world demand.

System Specifications

Power Hub Commercial Cabinet

First, the system is built around a Commodore Power Hub Commercial Cabinet. It is IP55 rated and includes built-in cooling. As a result, key components are protected from dust and weather.

In addition, the cabinet allows space for up to 12 lithium batteries. This means the system can expand in the future if required.

Three-Phase Inverter Setup

Next, the system includes:

  • 3 x Victron MultiPlus-II 48/10000 inverter chargers
  • Configured for three-phase output
  • Total inverter capacity of 30kVA

Because the inverters are set up in three-phase, the home receives balanced and stable power. For example, large appliances such as air conditioning units and pool pumps can start without causing voltage drops.

Solar Array

The solar system includes:

  • 48 x 440W solar panels
  • Total capacity of 21.12kW
  • Ground-mounted frame system

By using a ground mount system, the panels can be positioned for strong output. Furthermore, separating the array from the house improves layout and access.

Battery Storage

The battery bank consists of:

  • 9 x 5kWh Pylontech batteries
  • 48V lithium iron phosphate chemistry

Because of this storage capacity, the home can run high evening loads with confidence. As a result, generator use is reduced during normal weather conditions.

Solar Control and AC Coupling

The system also includes:

  • A 10kW three-phase AC-coupled inverter
  • A high-capacity MPPT solar controller

Together, these components maximise solar production and help maintain system balance throughout the day.

Generator Backup

In addition, the system integrates a 27.5kVA three-phase diesel generator with automatic start.

Therefore, if cloudy weather continues for several days, the generator automatically supports the batteries. Likewise, during periods of very high demand, it provides extra power. This protects battery life and ensures a consistent supply of electricity.

Why a 30kVA Three-Phase Off-Grid System Was Required

Today, many rural homes use as much power as homes connected to the grid. For instance, ducted air conditioning, electric ovens, and pool heating systems all draw significant energy.

While smaller off-grid systems may suit basic homes, this property required a stronger setup. Otherwise, the system would regularly operate near its limits.

A 30kVA three-phase off-grid solar system provides:

  • Higher continuous output
  • Strong surge handling
  • Balanced phase loading
  • Improved system stability
  • Lower risk of overload

Because the system was sized correctly from the beginning, the homeowner can run multiple large appliances at once without concern.

Installation Layout and Infrastructure

Importantly, the solar array, Power Hub 30, and generator were positioned around 50 metres from the home.

To achieve this, the installation required:

  • Underground AC cabling
  • Separate underground communication conduit
  • Concrete slab for the Power Hub and generator
  • Ground mount footings

As a result, the home benefits from lower operational noise. In addition, the layout improves access for servicing. Overall, the setup keeps infrastructure neat and separate from living areas.

Installed by LAD Electrical

This system was installed and commissioned by Luke from LAD Electrical.

Three-phase off-grid systems require careful setup. For example, inverter settings must be configured correctly, and generator controls must sync properly. Otherwise, performance can suffer over time.

Luke managed:

  • Inverter configuration
  • Generator integration
  • Ground mount coordination
  • Trenching and cable installation
  • Final commissioning

Consequently, the system operates smoothly under real-world conditions.

Final Outcome

Today, the Derrinal property runs on:

  • Reliable three-phase off-grid power
  • High-capacity lithium battery storage
  • Strong solar generation
  • Automatic generator support
  • Commercial-grade protection

Most importantly, the homeowner enjoys modern comfort without relying on the grid.

What This Means for Rural Property Owners

If you are planning a rural build in Victoria or elsewhere in Australia, and your home includes high-demand appliances, then correct system sizing is essential.

Instead of installing a system that is too small, it is far better to design for real usage. That way, you reduce stress on batteries, lower generator runtime, and improve long-term performance.

Ultimately, working with an experienced installer and choosing a properly engineered off-grid system ensures dependable energy independence for years to come.
